Bart 'Sloow Tapes' De Paepe and Kunstencentrum BELGIE present for the second time - after the successful first edition of 2010 and with he support of Pop in Limburg - more surprising sounds and images from the underground. For this occasion Graag Traag #2 switches to a lower gear and gives you more time to fully explore a palette of psychedelica, hypnotic drones, kraut, acidfolk, improv and pure Belgian folklore.

The launch of the 'Dream Weapon: The Art and Life of Angus Maclise 1938-1979' exhibition is also a unique opportunity to see the work of this versatile and influential New York musician, poet, visual artist, shaman and world traveler. It's the first presentation of his collected works in Europe. Curated by Will Cameron and Johan Kugelberg and in collaboration with the CIAP art gallery, Hasselt, Kunstencentrum BELGIE brings a posthumous ode to the great influence Maclise had on contemporary art.

GRAAG TRAAG FESTIVAL # 2

- CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE & TONY CONRAD:
In sixties New York Tony Conrad (musician, filmmaker) was, along with John Cale, Angus Maclise, Marian Zazeela and La Monte Young, a member of the legendary Theatre Of Eternal Music and stood, just like his friend and colleague Charlemagne Palestine (musician, performer, visual artist) at the birth of minimal music. Conrad prefers to call his long sustained violin tones 'dream music' and Palestine doesn't mind his pianodrones being classified as 'maximalism'. Either way, their 'maximal dream music' will bring the Graag Traag festival to an ultimate musical climax.

- CHARALAMBIDES play quiet songs, imbued with timeless dreamy psychedelica and is responsible for some of the most inspired gigs ever at Kunstencentrum BELGIE. With their brand new release 'Exile' on Kranky, Tom and Christina Carter are ready to bring some magical moments to Graag Traag.

- STEVE GUNN & JOHN TRUSCINSKI: Steve Gunn's (GHQ) guitarwork is inspired by the 'American primitivism' of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, Eastern raga and psychedelic blues. Together with drummer John Truscinski (GHQ, XO4) he loses himself in a dronefolk trance which is at times reminiscent of the legendary Sandy Bull/Billy Higgins duo.

- JUNZO SUZUKI: Dream psych folk, acid blues or far-out psychedelic jams: you never know with notorious troublemaker and guitarist Junzo Suzuki (Miminokoto, Astral Travelling Unit, 20 Guilders). But that's why we like him of course. Don't forget to bring your earplugs and LSD.

- TONTON MACOUTE is situated in a long line of French weirdness in which we also find bands like Fille Qui Mousse, Red Noise and Catalogue. Think of electronic instrumental hypnosis and motoric soundscapes with a deep basement feel.

- RALPH WHITE plays banjo, accordion, violin, kalimba and voice. Deep homemade Americana with a strong loner feel, wherein blues, country and traditionals blend in a highly psychedelic way. White drinks from the same kaleidoscopic vessel as Matt Valentine, Joshua, Dredd Foole or Willie Lane.

- GANGALAI & GOURABAI: What the French Chanson and traditional carnival of Binche have in common, will become evident during the concert of Gangalai & Gourabai (Buffle, ROT). This duo doesn't need more than ginger, guitar, casio and voice...and a few infectious dance moves of course.

- SILVESTER ANFANG II: Bart De Paepe aka Father Sloow summons the psychedelic occult krautrockers Sylvester Anfang II to kick off the Graag Traag festival in style. As a tribute to Angus Maclise and the Dream Weapon exhibit centered around this prominent figure from the New York underground, they will play a new live soundtrack to Ira Cohen's glorious psychedelic movie 'The Invasion Of Thunderbolt Pagoda'. Maclise made the original soundtrack and stars in the movie as the colorful Methedrine Cardinal. A perfect opener for the second Graag Traag festival.

- LOUISE LANDES LEVI: is a poet who was, along with Angus Maclise and Terry Riley, part of Daniel Moore's Floating Lotus Magic Opera Company in the Sixties. She studied sarangi and Indian music under Annapurna Devi, Ali Akbar Khan and La Monte Young. John Giorno says about ther poetry: 'Her poems sing and dance in the mind through the heart and throat, arms and legs and, w. great clarity and bliss. Louise is Saraswati, goddess of poetry ' (show at CIAP)

- HEAD OF WANTASTIQUET: Paul LaBrecque is a member of Sunburned Hand Of The Man, who made an alternative soundtrack to Ira Cohen's 'Invasion Of Thunderbolt Pagoda' movie a few years back. With his solo project LaBrecque weaves a web of dark folkdrone over shamanistic energetic fields hidden in dark forests. (show at CIAP)

- CIAN NUGENT: This young Irish guitarist listened close to old blues and fingerpickers like John Fahey but he also adds contemporary classical composers, Japanese minimalism and free jazz to his influences. In the past he toured with Jack Rose, Glenn Jones and Josef van Wissem. (Show at CIAP)

- CITY HANDS: Manuel Padding, (Helbaart, Silver Ghost) orchestrates with various electronics, tapes, percussion, a rainbow of home-, garden- and kitchen meditations to inner space. (show at CIAP)

  DREAMWEAPON
The Art and Life of Angus MacLise 1938-1979

Not only was Angus MacLise the original drummer of The Velvet Underground, the leading New York band with Lou Reed and John Cale, which he deliberately quitted early. He was also an artistic polyglot, a poet, musician, publisher and visual artist, an avant-garde performer, multi-media pioneer, downtown shaman and world citizen whose importance and influence on the contemporary music-, literature- and art-world only gradually becomes clear.

A recently discovered case of unique documents, photographs, drawings, journals, poems and tapes of Angus MacLise – donated by Hetty Maclise (wife of…) to the composer La Monte Young, was the direct cause and opportunity for the New York curators Johan Kugelberg and Will Cameron to give the public a glimpse of the work and life of this extraordinary artist with the 'Dream Weapon' exhibition. Graag Traag, kunstencentrum BELGIE and CIAP are very proud to bring this unique exhibition for the first time to Europe.
